BAS Core General Education Requirements

All Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) students must complete a set of Core general education requirements in order to graduate. If you haven’t satisfied the Core requirements with your previous transfer credit, you will need to satisfy them in order to graduate from the BAS degree program.**

Only specific, approved courses may be used to satisfy the Core Requirements, and most can only be satisfied with lower-level courses.

Rhetoric course work equivalent to Composition II and Speech: 3-4 s.h. Consult your Degree Audit to verify which Rhetoric course you need to satisfy this requirement.
- RHET:1030 Rhetoric (4 s.h.)
- Students who have transfer credit in composition, speech, and argumentation may instead be held to either;
  - RHET:1040 Writing and Reading (3 s.h.)
  - RHET:1060 Speaking and Reading (3 s.h.)
Quantitative or Formal Reasoning: 3 semester hours
Students using the following courses to satisfy the QFR requirement must email their advisor to make the request.
- BIOS:4120 Introduction to Biostatistics (3 s.h.)
- LING:1003 English Grammar (3 s.h.)
- PSQF:4143/STAT:4143 Introduction to Statistical Methods (3 s.h.)
Social Sciences: 3 s.h.
Values, Society, and Diversity OR Values and Society
Values, Society and Diversity (students admitted prior to Summer 2025 – previously called Domestic Diversity)
Students must complete one approved course (3 s.h.) that addresses diversity and domestic perspectives on current issues.
Students admitted prior to Summer 2025 will use any 3 s.h. course approved for the Values, Society and Diversity area of the CLAS General Education Program.
Students also may use one of these distance education courses, which are not part of the CLAS General Education Program, to satisfy the B.L.S. Values, Society and Diversity requirement.

- CSED:4197 Citizenship in a Multicultural Society (3 s.h.)
- SSW:3712/NURS:3712 Human Sexuality, Diversity, and Society (3 s.h.)
Values and Society (students admitted Summer 2025 and after)
Students must complete one approved course (3 s.h.) that addresses diversity and domestic perspectives on current issues.
Students admitted after Summer 2025 will use any 3 s.h. course approved for the Values and Society CLAS General Education Program.
Students also may use one of these distance education courses, which are not part of the CLAS General Education Program, to satisfy the B.L.S. Values and Society requirement.

Business/Management: 6 s.h. from the course subjects below

**Students who have an Associate of Arts degree from an Iowa or Illinois two-year institution participating in articulation agreements with the University of Iowa have satisfied the BAS Core general education Requirements, except Business/Management. The applicability of transfer courses is determined by the UI Office of Admissions. You may view previously evaluated courses using the MyUI Transfer Course Equivalency Guide.
