All Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) students must complete a set of Core general education requirements in order to graduate. If you haven’t satisfied the Core requirements with your previous transfer credit, you will need to satisfy them in order to graduate from the BAS degree program.**

Only specific, approved courses may be used to satisfy the Core Requirements, and most can only be satisfied with lower-level courses.

• Rhetoric course work equivalent to Composition II and Speech: 3-4 s.h. Consult your Degree Audit to verify which Rhetoric course you need to satisfy this requirement.
  • RHET:1030 Rhetoric (4 s.h.)
  • Students who have transfer credit in composition, speech, and argumentation may instead be held to either;
    • RHET:1040 Writing and Reading (3 s.h.)
    • RHET:1060 Speaking and Reading (3 s.h.)
• Quantitative or Formal Reasoning: 3 semester hours
  • PSQF:4143/STAT:4143 Introduction to Statistical Methods (3 s.h.) can also be used to satisfy Quantitative or Formal Reasoning (QFR). Students using this course to satisfy the QFR requirement must email their advisor to make the request.
• Social Sciences: 3 s.h.
• Values, Society, and Diversity: 3 s.h. 
• Business/Management:  6 s.h. from the course subjects below

**Students who have an Associate of Arts degree from an Iowa or Illinois two-year institution participating in articulation agreements with the University of Iowa have satisfied the BAS Core general education Requirements, except Business/Management.
