Offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences within the Classics the Minor in Ancient Civilization may be completed entirely online. 

 

The Minor in Ancient Civilization is designed to provide a structure for gaining knowledge of a variety of literary works and written sources from the ancient Mediterranean, familiarity with the physical world in which the ancient Mediterranean people lived, and understanding of the impact that the political, intellectual and social environments of the people from the ancient Mediterranean have on modern cultures.

Online Curriculum

The undergraduate minor in ancient civilization requires a minimum of 15 s.h., including at least 9 s.h. in advanced courses taken at the University of Iowa. Students must maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.00 in all courses for the minor and in all UI courses for the minor. Coursework in the minor may not be taken pass/nonpass.

A maximum of 3 s.h. of work for another major, minor, or certificate in the Department of Classics and up to 3 s.h. of lower-level transfer credit may be counted toward the minor.

Department of Classics courses with the prefix CLSA, CLSG, and CLSL and courses cross-referenced with the prefix CLSA count toward the minor. Advanced courses for the minor:

  • Greek courses (prefix CLSG) numbered 2000 or above
  • Latin courses (prefix CLSL) numbered 2001 or above
  • Classics Courses (prefix CLSA) numbered 3000 or above
  • Appropriate courses in art, religion, history, and philosophy may be counted toward the minor if approved by the undergraduate advisor
  • Students who have taken high school Greek or Latin should consult the advisor

How to Declare the Minor

Students may add a Minor to their plan of study at any time.  Declaring a minor will allow you to request a degree audit for the minor requirements in MyUI.  There is no penalty to remove a minor from a plan of study and one may be removed at any time.

Current BAS/BLS University of Iowa students may add the minor to their plan of study by contacting their assigned BAS/BLS advisor or students may declare minors through MyUI by selecting Student Records > Advising > Programs of Study & Advisors. After the minor has been declared, please log into MyUI to make an appointment with your advisor for the Minor in Ancient Civilization.  

How to remove the minor from your program of study

Current BAS/BLS students can email their assigned academic advisor to ask to remove the minor from their plan of study. There is no penalty to remove a minor program from a plan of study and one may be removed at any time.
